Place on top of the can with the lever up and press down to lock in onto the can. Ratchet the lever up and down and after a full circle around the edge of the can, you will feel less resistance and the can is open. It leaves no sharp edges and you never have to touch the lid. The cutting wheel cuts from the side leaving the rim smooth, not sharp or jagged. The tiny, strong jaws on the side of the opener remove the lid.
