This opener works great, even for my mother who has some hand strength issues. If you buy cans of tuna, salmon, chicken, etc. and press the liquid out with the lid, this won't work as the lid doesn't fit in the can as with a traditional opener. (Keep the old one on hand for these items.) Also, product canned in liquid is usualy quite full and spills easily when removing the lid.

Some people open a lot of cans and have an electric can opener on their countertop or underneath their cabinet. Others like myself need a can opener only on occasion and don't want a tool that takes up more space than other more utilized kitchen tools. I was reluctant to purchase this Kuhn Rikon but since the company manufactures some of my favorite kitchen gadgets and pressure cookers, I gave it a try. The feel in my hand was appealing and I liked the selection of colors. I also found it on sale and I'm a frugal consumer. In the year I've owned this can opener, I've increased the number of cans in my home. I've started purchasing dog food in the can to give my little dog a spoonful with her kibble. I buy huge cans of tomatoes and make my sauce more often. Cans of tuna are opened more frequently, as are legumes.
Once you get the swing of how this operates, it is a cinch. You position the head of the opener at the top of your can with two little arrows at the edge...Read more

I previously owned the compact scissor action model, which worked splendidly. I tried this version out of curiosity, and now I prefer it over the other types. Since it is difficult to tell from the pictures, I will try to summarize the difference:
The other models by this manufacturer clamp on in the typical fashion. That is by opening the split handles, like a pair of scissors or pliers, and manually clamping the cutting mechanism to the rim of the can. They differ from convention in that they are an outer edge cutter, with the blade, wheel, and knob all operating in the horizontal plane rather than vertical. This arrangement splits the can seam around the outside edge, so no more lid cave-in, and no more mess. The can opener stays clean! Once split, there is a little set of pliers that one uses to grab the edge of the can and lever the top up.
Now the auto version is a bit different. No more split handles. The cutter is clamped against the wheel by turning the...Read more
