Amazon.com Review
Don't mess with a classic: the Swing-A-Way can opener not only boasts a Good Housekeeping award, but was also the first can opener in outer space. Thanks to a patented gear-driven cutting wheel, the opener requires less elbow grease to turn the crank, and the rubberized handles cushion your hands from what little work they're doing. Simple, classic, and well designed, the can opener includes a small built-in bottle opener, as well as a five-year limited warranty. --Ariel Meadow Stallings

Avg. Customer Review: 4.5 Star

Customer Rating: 4 Star
Summary: Basic can opener 2010-08-21
Comment: Decent price and the quality seems acceptable enough, although I am quite the neophyte when it comes to things in the kitchen.

Summary: Tough to Beat Classic 2010-08-05
Comment: I love products like this. It was great decades ago and it's great now. This is the original Swing-A-Way can opener that my grandparents used, and it works just as good today as it did then. It is tough, reliable, and built to last. Over the years, as a bachelor, I went through several can openers that would end up seizing or breaking in some manner, due to cheap parts or an attempt to make them ergonomically better somehow. This classic can opener has got to be exhibit A in the argument for not changing some things that just work well, every time, all the time.

The operation is smooth and the cutting wheel sharp. It opens cans easily and cleanly, every time. I can't ask anything more of a can opener than that. It does have a bottle opener on the side and I'll allow it that minor frill. (My Hamm's beer can punch and bottle opener still works just fine, thank you very much) The soft vinyl coverings on the handle provide ample cushion and don't slide on the handle.

Basically, this is a great, well-made product. Highly recommended, though it's likely to be the last can opener you'll ever buy.

Summary: Last Forever 2010-07-28
Comment: This can opener just broke on me. I must have had it for at least 20 years. Maybe 25. Its time for an electric can opener for me. Just thought I'd let you know how long it lasted.

Summary: After all these years . . . 2010-07-26
Comment: All the fancy upscale would-be replacements that promised one grand advance after another were tossed when they didn't measure up. This simple tool still works perfectly after many years. It takes up virtually no space. It is still easy to turn, easy to clean and 100% effective. I finally started turning a deaf ear to ads for new can opening gadgets because nothing could beat this opener. At one time, I needed to open a fair number of cans in my cooking, but having turned to more unprocessed food, I don't so much anymore. All the more reason to have one simple and easy to use tool available when needed that doesn't need an outlet or batteries or counter space. Sometimes the basics are best. Highly recommended.

Summary: Simple, Quality, Traditional Can-Opener 2010-07-21
Comment: I love high tech gadgets and toys, but when it comes to can-openers, I found that every fancy one seemed to perform either poorly or adequately. For the price, "adequate" doesn't typically cut it with can-openers (sorry, no pun intended).

I've found that this type of swing-away hand-crank can-opener is about the cheapest, simplest, most functional option. With minimal physical exertion, it opens cans like it is supposed to. Big cans or little cans. It doesn't need batteries or an extension cord or charging or excessive cleaning. You open stuff. If stuff gets on it, you rinse it. If it's really dirty, you throw it in the dish washer. Then you toss it in the drawer.

There's nothing about this can-opener to deserve a five-star rating from the "oh my god, it's the most amazing device ever and I can't fathom how I have lived so long without it!" bent . . . it just deserves five stars from the "it does what it should without any qualms at all" point of view. If you want a can opener that opens cans and you don't want to spend $30, get this or one like it.
